AbstractThe author conducts a comparative analysis of Natanson's and Bose's articles and suggests an interpretation of the results achieved by the two. The paper aims at verifying the conviction expressed by many researchers that Natanson was close to formulating the statistical method today known as Bose statistics. It is shown that the mode of calculating the distribution of indistinguishable particles as employed by Planck and explained by Natanson is identical to the statistics presented some years later by Bose. The results achieved by Natanson were in due time completely forgotten.
